All About Pressure Cookers
Pressure cookers are sometimes referred to as instant pots, multi cookers, multi pots and crock pots. In addition, there are different types of pressure cookers, such as the heavily advertised electric pressure cookers and the old school stovetop pressure cookers. Side note, both variations have had pressure lawsuits filed against them.
Anyhow, these kitchen appliances have been around for decades, as convenience is often a demand of at-home chefs. Pressure cookers have the ability to heat and steam contents with a high amount of pressure. This helps to reduce the time it takes to cook a regular meal on the stove or in the oven.
There are numerous components of a pressure cooker that can be defective or faulty. Should the lid lock, pressure vent, lid itself, sealing components of these items, or gasket become loose, faulty, or defective, you basically have a volcano of fresh food ready to burst. The temperature inside of a pressure cooker can reach upwards of 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pressure Cooker Injuries Caused by Explosions
Those who have been injured by a pressure cooker that exploded have not only suffered from severe burns, but there have been noted cases of amputation, blindness, concussion, broken bones, and disfigurement. Anyone who is in the vicinity of a defective pressure cooker is vulnerable severe injury. This includes not only the cook but the children, friends, spouse, family members, and even the family pet.
Stories of Pressure Cookers That Exploded
In 2017, CBS4 Miami reported on the kitchen pressure cooker explosion in Beth Morales’ home. She and her husband were using their pressure cooker to make a stew. Unbeknownst to them, the lid lock failed prematurely and when Morales went to open it up, the contents went everywhere on her body. She now lives with permanent scars from the experience.
Morales learned she was not the only consumer who has been injured by a pressure cooker explosion. After Googling the issue, she found out there has been a history of pressure cooker explosions across the country. Many such items are popular brand names carried in big box stores.
“It’s time that this manufacturer and others that make this product say it’s time to revamp this or take it off the line. It’s just injuring people,” Morales said.
Two year prior, CBS4 Miami had reported on the Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL explosions. It is certainly not a surprise to learn of another victim to a pressure cooker explosion was featured in the news.
Between the CBS4 Tristar report and the incident with Morales, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) uploaded many pages of consumer complaints similar to the Morales incident. It is a recurring problem that many companies have yet to fix.
A large number of people who have been burned or injured by exploding pressure cookers have already received settlements in their lawsuits.
Pressure Cooker Lawsuits on The Rise Due to COVID-19
The concern these days with pressure cookers is that more people are staying home to cook due to the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the United States. This means there will certainly be a rise in the incidence of pressure cooker explosions and trips to the Emergency Room.
Any number of components used in assembling the device can be faulty during the manufacturing process. Just one misstep or poorly constructed pressure cooker can be the exact cause of a dangerous situation.
In addition, many of the pressure cookers manufacturers who have had lawsuits or pressure cooker class action lawsuits filed against them have defectively designed their pressure cookers.
Below are examples of just a few pressure cooker defects:
- Faulty release valves may cause the lid to open before all the steam has escaped
- When the seal on the lid is not precisely in place, steam can cause the lid to eject
- The appliance can overheat or explode if the automatic shut off is defective, or if the manual stovetop pressure cooker does not have a manual shut off

Interested in Filing a Pressure Cooker Lawsuit?
Those who have been injured by an exploding pressure cooker can file a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer.
Many people who have filed a pressure cooker lawsuit have been able to target not just the manufacturer, but the whole lineup of retailers, suppliers, distributors, etc. Sometimes it may also include the engineers, product designers, contractors, or anyone else who participated in the making of the product. For this reason, those who file a pressure cooker lawsuit have been able to do so for the following reasons:
- Defectively manufactured product – this indicates just that: a defective product, either through manufacturing production or within distribution.
- Defectively designed product – indicates the product design itself was flawed by design. Many pressure cookers have been recalled for this reason.
- Failure to provide proper instructions or warnings – this is sometimes known as “defective marketing” and typically indicate the appliance did not have warning labels or instructions on how to properly use the product, warning signs to look out for, injuries that may occur, etc.
A pressure cooker lawyer may be able to file on your behalf areas of recovery such as Past and future pain and suffering; past and future medical expenses; lost wages; loss of ability to earn future wages; life care services; personal support; home modifications or repairs; compensation for damage to your home; punitive damages.
